Caitlin Clark is set on proving that her groundbreaking rookie season was just the beginning of what’s to come.
The Indiana Fever superstar led her struggling team to the playoffs, fulfilling the expectations that came with being the No. 1 pick. Clark made history in Game 2 of the postseason, scoring the most points ever by a rookie in a playoff game with 25, although the Connecticut Sun ultimately advanced.
Clark decided to skip the lucrative Unrivaled league to focus on improving her game during the offseason, as she prepares to work with new coach Stephanie White.
White, who is fully focused on winning multiple championships with Clark, has already made a significant move this offseason. The Fever re-signed veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell to a core player contract, a one-year deal on the maximum base salary.
Mitchell, Indiana’s all-time No. 2 scorer, is entering her eighth season with the team. Clark showed her approval by tagging Mitchell in her Instagram story, responding with “Duh” and a heart emoji.
Mitchell expressed excitement about playing alongside Clark, stating, “I met one of the greatest people in the world, Caitlin Clark, who just ran the basketball world. So I think together, we hope to make you guys proud. We hope to make you feel like you’re part of our success and our journey. I’m here, let’s do this.”
After Clark was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month in August, she felt that Mitchell deserved the honor even more, saying, “I honestly thought she probably should have been Player of the Month. I feel very fortunate to play with her.”
Mitchell, drafted in 2018, has led the Fever in scoring in all but two seasons, and last year, she was just two points behind Clark’s team-high tally of 769, with both players averaging 19.2 points per game.
With their backcourt duo secured, the Fever are ramping up for the 2025 season. Clark will be eager for a fast start, as Indiana opens the season against her old rival, Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky, on May 17.
Clark, who was named WNBA Rookie of the Year, has also declined an invitation to participate in the NBA’s All-Star weekend. The New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu competed in a three-point contest against Steph Curry last year, but Clark is reportedly not interested in participating this time.
Sports Business Journal reported that Clark turned down the opportunity to join a three-point contest featuring the likes of Curry, Klay Thompson, and Ionescu, explaining that the format didn’t appeal to her. Clark prefers catch-and-shoot 3-pointers and isn’t keen on moving around the circle or picking balls off a rack.
Despite this, Clark is clearly making her mark, as she is the fastest player to reach 100 three-pointers in WNBA history.
SBJ also claimed there’s a possibility that Steph Curry could participate in the three-point shootout during WNBA All-Star weekend next summer.
