Caitlin Clark’s influence on the WNBA has been undeniable, as she shattered numerous records during her rookie season. Chiney Ogwumike believes this impact will only grow as Clark enters her second year in the league.
Appearing on ESPN’s First Take panel on Thursday, Ogwumike observed how many people view Clark as a star who “moves the needle” for teams. However, Ogwumike has a different perspective.
“A lot of people say that Caitlin Clark ‘moves the needle.’ That is wrong. She is the needle. She dictates,” Ogwumike stated. “We all know what she has done on the floor — it’s historic, right? But off the floor, my goodness. She and the Indiana Fever accounted for 45% of all broadcast value in the WNBA last season. She also helped boost merchandising numbers.”
Ogwumike emphasized how Clark’s influence extends far beyond just her performance on the court. “I think Caitlin moves because she knows people follow her wherever she goes, and she’s very strategic about controlling where her value is.”
